The blind leading the blind

It took a visit to Greece by a UNHCR representative to point out the inadequacy of the government and the state mechanism in general to handle the escalating issue of illegal migrants.

It also took Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos to remind Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras that major funding is available to Greece to be utilized by the government for the same purpose – as if the problem was not there for all to see.

It turns out the solution to the problem is supposed to come from Maximos Mansion, in other words from the prime minister himself, who is set on handling the issue.

While we wait for the results, it should be pointed out that this is hardly the right image for any administration or a country.

As for the minister in charge of immigration policy, she limited herself Thursday to expressing satisfaction at the fact that independent officials are demonstrating their solidarity with migrants and refugees who have set up camp in Pedion tou Areos park in central Athens.
