Dangerous racket

The police’s crackdown on a large ring that was producing and dealing illegal liquor is not just another item in the crime bulletin. It is common knowledge that illegal liquor is big business in Greece and that it is spread out all across the country.

It is also common knowledge that many bars and nightclubs are involved in these rackets, plying their customers with low-quality alcohol, and particularly during the summer when they have more business due to tourism.

There is no need to point out the serious effects low-grade alcohol can have on customers’ health and safety, but it is worth stressing once more how lackadaisical authorities are on implementing drinking rules, particularly when it comes to underage consumers.

Every country needs to curb such activities that have a direct negative consequence on the public’s well-being, and Greece is no exception.
