Need for caution

Having come under significant pressure due to recent developments, Ankara has clearly seen a reason to readjust its foreign policy.

Under its president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey appears to be pursuing a rapprochement with Russia and Israel (Turkish relations with both states had hit a nadir) while at the same time it has chosen to create a climate of tension with the United States and Europe, both of whom have turned a critical eye on ongoing developments in Turkey.

That said, officials in Athens have every reason to keep a close watch on what is happening in the neighboring country. They may also draw some conclusions.

But they have absolutely no reason to maneuver themselves into traps that could become the source of tension – even less so when actions are in fact publicity stunts aimed at domestic consumption.

Turkey is, after all, an unpredictable neighbor.
