Perils of nationalist populism

The perils of nationalist populism are all too apparent in the many travails that the UK is going through following the Brexit vote and, as a result, that Europe as a whole is experiencing.

Here we have a country with powerful institutions and a strong sense of continuity, which nevertheless became embroiled in this dangerous adventure because of politicians who couldn’t stand the pressure being exerted on them.

Britain’s decision to leave the European Union was the combined result of weak politicians and the irresponsible role played by a part of the media, along with the extreme opinions expressed on social media.

The only good thing that can be said about it is that it may have served as a wake-up call for the rest of the European Union so that it can guard itself against a domino effect that could even lead to its dissolution.
