KARAMANLIS ON THE WAY UP: Thessaloniki, 6 – In the presence of the public order minister, Mr Constantine Karamanlis, the reconstruction of Vassileos Georgiou-Vassilissis Olgas Avenue began today. This road, from which tramlines are already being removed, will reopen to traffic by the end of September. Mr Karamanlis then reviewed work along the coast on a new avenue similar to that between Athens-Eden-Glyfada. STATEMENT BY STEPHANOPOULOS: Foreign Minister Stephanos Stephanopoulos, referring yesterday to the fall of Dien Bien Phu, said it would «always remain a symbol of the heroism and self-sacrifice of the French troops…» THE FALL OF DIEN BIEN PHU: London, 10 – Peking radio has broadcast a communique from the Viet Minh confirming that the heroic defender of the garrison at Dien Bien Phu, which fell yesterday, the French Brigadier (Christian de Castries), has been taken prisoner. The broadcast did not specify the conditions under which he was captured, nor whether he was injured.
