HAILE SELASSIE: The Lion of Judah, Emperor of Abyssinia Haile Selassie I arrived in Athens yesterday on an official visit, passing under a symbolic arch erected in his honor at the entrance to the city. CYPRUS: According to urgent cables from Nicosia, after a lengthy meeting yesterday the Cyprus National Council issued a communique proclaiming the Cypriot people’s desire to reject the draft Constitution proposed by the Churchill government. SCHOOLBOOKS: The association of authors of schoolbooks have voted to call for the abolition of the Organization of School Textbook Publications, which they say is anachronistic and illiberal. In no other free country is there a monopoly on school textbooks, which is harmful for schoolchildren and the work of teachers and also a financial burden on the State, which is deprived of taxation on books. The association also calls for the publication and use of at least five reading texts for primary school and three books for each class of high school, so that teachers are free to choose what they see as the most appropriate. They also suggest that the approved books should not be used longer than three years.
