PAPAGOS-SALAZAR: Lisbon, 2 – At 5 p.m., the Greek prime minister, Field Marshal Alexandros Papagos, and his wife arrived here by train accompanied by Foreign Minister Mr Stefanos Stephanopoulos and Minister to the Prime Minister Mr Georgios Rallis. They were warmly welcomed by Portugal’s Prime Minister Antonio de Oliveira Salazar, Foreign Minister Paolo Cunha and other officials. (…) At 6.30 p.m., the field marshal, wearing an ordinary military uniform and accompanied by the two Greek ministers, had a meeting with Mr Salazar and presented him with the Cross of St George as well as an ancient amphora. The two prime ministers then had a discussion for about half an hour. GEORGIOS VERGOTIS: The Gold Cross of the Order of George I has been awarded to the shipowner Mr Georgios Vergotis for his assistance to the earthquake victims of the Ionian Islands and particularly for his generous donation of 150,000 pounds for the complete reconstruction of his home village of Kourkoumelata on the island of Cephalonia.
