TURKEY: London, 30 – The Papagos government has achieved a substantial diplomatic victory in the Cyprus issue, irrespective of the final outcome. The British government has invited its counterparts in Athens and Ankara to participate in a London conference on the political and defense issues related to the Eastern Mediterranean, including Cyprus. First proposed two years ago, when the Cyprus issue was first raised, it was abandoned by the British colonial secretary. («We will never discuss Cyprus,» he said.) Irrespective of the outcome of the issue, the window of opportunity for negotiation has opened, and Great Britain has recognized the existence of a Cyprus issue. The invitation was announced this afternoon in the House of Commons by the prime minister, Sir Anthony Eden, five hours after the British ambassador in Athens, Sir Charles Peake, had presented it to the Greek government, which, according to an official announcement, «is studying with care and interest the invitation from the British government.» EOKA-TERRORISM: London 30 – EOKA, the clandestine organization fighting for the union of Cyprus with Greece, is threatening to kill members of the Cypriot police who join the new counterterrorism unit.
