CYPRUS ISSUE: New York, 25 – Greece officially asked the United Nations today to include the question of the self-determination of Cyprus on the agenda of the next General Assembly. The request was submitted by Greece’s permanent representative to the UN, Mr Christos Xanthopoulos-Palamas. GEORGIOS MANTZAVINOS: (From a commentary in Kathimerini): Georgios Mantzavinos, whose sudden death has deeply saddened Greek society, was one of the most interesting personalities to appear in the country in the past 40 years. As a civil servant in the early days of his career, as general director of the State Audit Council later, as deputy governor and then governor of the Bank of Greece, as a minister in various governments, as Greece’s representative at a number of international financial conferences, he played an important role in the country’s economic development. MEDITERRANEAN GAMES: The Second Mediterranean Games have ended in Barcelona, Spain. Greece ranked third place overall in track and field events with 74 points, following France, which scored 192 points and Italy which scored 104.
