IN SUPPORT OF KARAOLIS: Nicosia, 15 – The Cypriot people’s struggle for their freedom and to save the Cypriot patriot Michail Karaolis – who has been sentenced to death – has assumed dimensions of a general uprising. Not 24 hours after yesterday’s incidents in Cyprus’s three largest towns, fresh demonstrations were held this morning in favor of Cyprus’s union with Greece and against Karaolis’s death sentence. In many parts of the island, clashes between demonstrators, mostly schoolchildren, and British soldiers and police officers turned into pitched battles, with the demonstrators throwing stones and the British trying to disperse the crowds with tear gas and clubs.ITALIAN ASSISTANCE: The education minister, Mr Achilleas Gerokostopoulos, yesterday received the Italian ambassador, Mr Casto Caruso, who informed him of the decision by the government of Antonio Segni to donate 20 million lire (1 million drachmas) to meet the needs of earthquake victims in the Volos area. Of that amount, 320,000 drachmas will go toward establishing three scholarships for university students from the area for studies at universities in Italy.
