TOWARD A POPULAR FRONT: The advancement of the electoral bill for consideration by the relevant parliamentary committee has prompted the beginning of negotiations between opposition parties, which, despite their vociferous protests, seem to have accepted the electoral system proposed by the government. These talks, still in their early stages, are only general. Nevertheless, certain opposition parties, or individual members in them, have been stepping up overtures to parties, including even the extreme left, in an attempt to secure the second slot in the next election. During this first phase of talks, one of the leaders of the Democratic Party, Mr Georgios Kartalis, has played a decisive role as a link between the parties of the so-called center and the extreme left. MARTIAL LAW: Nicosia, 28 – The British governor of Cyprus, Field Marshal John Harding, yesterday proclaimed martial law across the island. In an urgent announcement by the government yesterday evening, a state of emergency was declared «due to terrorist violence and widespread disorder.»
