ELECTION RESULT: (From a commentary in Kathimerini): «As was expected, despite the crazed reaction of all the forces of darkness, despite the diabolical means used by the New EAM (Ed. note: meaning the Democratic Union of centrists, left-wingers and right-wingers, such as Constantine Tsaldaris), they did not manage to drag Greece down into the depths. The country will not succumb to the those who wish to undermine its freedom and prosperity. The New EAM used all manner of lies, underhandedness, slander and deceit against the new man (Constantine Karamanlis) whose ambition it is to give new life to our country and to lead it on the path of honor. The Greek people’s verdict, up to the time that these lines were being written, gives well-founded hopes that it will be in favor of the leader of the National Radical Union (ERE). The days that are to follow will belong to him alone.» HARDING TO MAKARIOS: Nicosia, 15 – Cyprus Radio, which is government-controlled, has announced in a broadcast that yesterday’s letter from the governor, Field Marshal Sir John Harding, to Archbishop Makarios «was not devoid of promises.»
