STATE DEVELOPMENT: A year after the transfer of the Public Power Corporation (PPC) from American to Greek management, the chairman of PPC’s board, Mr Petros Gounarakis, held a press conference yesterday to mark the occasion. «Today is a milestone in the history of the Public Power Corporation and of the country’s economic and cultural development… Abundant power, reliable power, power for all Greeks – this is and will remain PPC’s overriding goal and one which will change the entire face of Greece forever… While Greece was struggling to maintain its nationhood, it was observed by most politicians and technical experts that the state, which is responsible for the general good, should be the one to handle the problem of producing and distributing electrical power… These were the principles behind the founding, in 1950, of the agency to carry out this policy, that is PPC. It is thanks to the efforts of the government, its Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis and the minister for industry who took a decisive stand on the issue… Still pending is the purchase by PPC within the next four years of all existing power production units on mainland Greece and on the island of Evia.»
