AMERICAN INTERVENTION: (Following an attempt by Deputy Prime Minister Sophocles Venizelos to table a bill restoring the simple proportional electoral system, despite the opposition of the ailing Prime Minister Nikolaos Plastiras.) US Ambassador John Peurifoy released the following statement yesterday: «This morning the US ambassador received the director of the prime minister’s political bureau, Mr Moatsos, and asked him to tell Mr Plastiras that the US government shares his objections to the restoration of the simple proportional system (…). As the US government feels that this would unavoidably perpetuate the instability within the government, with catastrophic effects on the use of American aid to Greece, it feels obliged to make public its support for Prime Minister Plastiras’s patriotic stance.
