WITH GOD AND STALIN: London, 17 – Changed perceptions that occurred last year at the Kremlin, particularly regarding «de-Stalinization,» were evident in statements made today by USSR leader Nikita Khrushchev. Speaking in Moscow during a reception in honor of visiting Chinese Prime Minister Chou En Lai, Khrushchev said, «God will provide so that every communist can fight for the good of the working classes, as Stalin did.» DEATH OF TOSCANINI: New York, 16 – The famous Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini passed away in his sleep at his home here today at the age of 89. The announcement of his death saddened all of Italy, where Toscanini was respected as a national hero. L’AFFAIRE SADE: Paris, 12 – A Parisian court, hearing the case against Parisian publisher Jean Jacques Pauvert, who has published a limited edition of the complete works of the Marquis de Sade, has fined the publisher 200,000 francs. His attorney, the famous lawyer Maurice Garco, claimed that the works of Sade, who gave his name to the word «sadism,» should be judged according to their philosophical content and their enormous influence on 19th century thought.
