EDOUARD HERRIOT: Lyon, 26 – The former French prime minister Edouard Herriot died here today at the age of 84 after a long illness. For many years he was the leader of the Radical Party, an honorary president for life of the French National Assembly and also the longtime mayor of Lyon. After a brief improvement, Herriot’s health deteriorated yesterday. He is mourned not only by the French people but by the citizens of many states all over the world. HERRIOT AND GREECE: (From «An Athenian’s Notes») «Among the obituaries listing the works and articles written by the esteemed late Edouard Herriot, I saw no mention of the volume published in 1930 of his impressions of Greece titled ‘Under the Olive Tree.’ The book is extremely interesting… beautiful and rich artistically. Herriot, with his broad intellect and deep knowledge of Greek culture, welcomed the vision of the real Greece alongside the image he had created in his mind when he had been studying it… I had the good fortune to see Herriot make an informal speech and to hear him refer to a lovely thought of Plutarch’s.»
