DEATH OF DOROTHEOS: A telegram from Stockholm received by the Archdiocese of Athens yesterday afternoon brought news of the death of Archbishop Dorotheos of Athens and All Greece at a clinic in the Swedish capital two hours earlier, due to heart failure. As soon as the sad news was received, church bells were rung and people came to pray for the soul of the departed… Born Dorotheos Kottaras on the island of Hydra in 1888, he had been elected archbishop just last year. According to a decree issued by the Education and Religious Affairs Ministry, the hierarchy of the Church of Greece will meet shortly to elect a new archbishop. KARAMANLIS’S STATEMENT: Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis made the following statement on the occasion of the archbishop’s death: «The entire Greek nation and the Greek government is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Archbishop Dorotheos. The Church has prematurely lost a wise, humble and hardworking hierarch, one whom it sorely needed in these difficult times for the nation…»
