Labor union takes responsible step

The decision by the General Confederation of Greek Labor to take some part in the debate on the reform of the social security system, albeit through parliamentary committees, is a welcome step that should be praised. The stance of the union leadership is a sign of prudence and responsibility toward the workers whose interests it represents. It is common knowledge that the pension system is bankrupt. Sure, one could point a finger at the culprits, both now and in the past. Most important however is reaching a solution to this major social conundrum. Solutions require dialogue, communication and a constructive blend of different ideas. Greece’s unions face an historic task: They must do their part in order to ensure a viable future for workers. That can only come through predetermined and sincere talks. Any other behavior, such as calls for «disobedience,» only help to feed the narcissism of the irresponsible.
