Lawlessness with impunity

The destruction wreaked at the Pangrati school complex comes as a reminder of Greek society’s greatest ill: widespread lawlessness that is fueled by the certainty that, in Greece, it will not be punished. The extensive vandalism of the school is simply the climax of actions by those lawbreakers who operate under a political mantle of those who are supposedly fighting for a better future, while really making the present even worse. We will have to take a long hard look at ourselves some day. In the wreck of the high school, we will have to address that perception, so widespread in Greece, that a «revolutionary cause» justifies all means. We will have to realize that one small infringement of the law, such as the takeover of public property, leads to even greater lawlessness, such as its destruction. We can only hope that the guilty parties are found and made to pay for the damage they caused. And if they are found, we hope not to see such a display of solidarity as we have seen in the past.
