CYPRUS: New York, 3 (From our correspondent in the USA) – The Indian plan for the Cyprus issue has been attacked by the delegations from Britain, the USA and Turkey. The USA supports the Persian plan, which favors Turkey’s interests. Britain and the USA, according to Turkish diplomats, have abandoned all pretence and are now in favor of dividing the island. Greece’s last-minute demarche to the US State Department, asking the US to maintain a neutral stance, has proved fruitless. The Greek delegation was up against the entire bloc of colonial and pro-colonial powers as well as others dependent upon them. Ghana, for example, which is dependent on Britain, was pressured to vote against the Indian plan. Despite their promises to abstain from the vote on the British, Greek and Turkish plans, the Scandinavian states, Italy and Austria have now bowed to US pressure to vote for the Persian proposal. Spain, which also influences the Latin American states, had promised its support, but now appears to be willing to abstain. Among the Arab nations, Libya and Saudi Arabia have declared their intention to abstain or vote against the (Indian) plan due to their economic ties with Britain and the USA.
