No place to hide from green issues

It has become abundantly clear that a growing number of Greeks are developing an awareness and interest in protecting the environment in which they live. The steady stream of thousands of people who have taken part in volunteer tree-planting events around Attica and the concern of residents of certain neighborhoods to protect the precious little green they have left shows that the environment has become a basic priority for all of us in this country. It is impressive, however, that despite all this there is a section of our political elite, especially those that are responsible for environmental policy, who still refuse to get the message, be it about the pollution of the Asopos River or about the protection of Mount Hymettus from land-grabbers and developers. The only way forward appears to be for them to realize that when it comes time for people to cast their ballots, protection of the environment will be as important as them more traditional issues that grab Greeks’ attention.
