CONSTANTINE KARAMANLIS: Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis has issued the following message to the people on the occasion of Independence Day: «On March 25, we turn our thoughts to our great past and honor the memory of all those who struggled and sacrificed themselves for their country. The revolution of 1821, as well as all the liberation struggles waged by Greeks, have shown the strength of the moral factor in history. The altars on which our martyrs and heroes have sacrificed themselves are altars of freedom and Christian spirit. Another example of that spirit was the effort made by our country to liberate Cyprus, a harsh struggle that now has given us the satisfaction that we have achieved that goal in a way that combines freedom for the Greeks of Cyprus with the restoration of past, useful alliances.» BAGHDAD ACCORD: London, 23 – A new development arose today in the dramatic crisis in the Middle East when Prime Minister Abd al-Karim Qasim of Iraq announced that his country was officially withdrawing from the Baghdad Treaty. Religious leaders in Cairo, Egypt, have continued their attacks on Iraqi communists and against communism in general.
