Picking the wrong people

Endless talk of political scandals without any real hope of purging the domestic political system of corruption is jeopardizing the credibility of that system. There is no doubt that the root cause of the majority of the scandals of the type that are now making the headlines is that people of questionable ability and ethics are included on political party tickets. In some cases they are even appointed as government ministers. At the same time, we have yet to rid ourselves of the state-dependent entrepreneurs that would be looking for a job were it not for their political friends in high places. As long as our political leaders remain blase and irresponsible in the selection of parliamentary candidates and ministers and as long as they fail to curb graft and corruption within their party apparatuses, they will continue to pay a hefty price for their wrongheaded decisions. And, what is worse, they will carry on undermining the credibility and stability of our political system.
