Confusion adding to woes

The first session of Prime Minister George Papandreou’s new, now expanded Cabinet following the reshuffle earlier this week has been the cause of deep disappointment. Bolstering economic growth is supposed to be the newly reshuffled Socialist government’s top priority. Yet the much-heralded law on large investments has met with controversy, as senior ministers of the PASOK government expressed strong objections to the draft legislation. Needless to say, a government that lacks a clear delineation of responsibilities or consensus about who must do what to instigate growth is bound to fail. Setting up biministerial committees under these circumstances sounds more like a bad joke. Before the prime minister goes on to resume his schedule of foreign visits, he should first make up his mind and explain to his ministers who is responsible for what in this new government. Any prolonged period of uncertainty will only further damage the country.
