ALL-POWERFUL AMERICA: Washington, 11 – Speaking today in Kansas City, Secretary of State Dean Acheson made the following statement, among others: «As of last January, the Soviet Union has been systematically and methodically seeking to stir up hate against the American people, characterizing them and their leaders as callous and inhuman.» Observing that this tactic was contradictory to Russia’s pro-peace proclamations, he stressed that Americans had to consolidate their military defense forces so as to increase the economic, political and social power of the free nations. He then said that the production of armored tanks, airplanes and other weaponry had been increased six times over in order to help both the US and its allies respond to attack from any quarter. Acheson then expounded on the theory of the US’s military effort being concentrated on a «counterattack force» such as a strategic air force and the atomic bomb, giving the assurance that all-out war as a response to isolated attacks should not be the country’s only option. EXILES: It has been announced that 76 women are being held in Trikkeri (in the prefecture of Magnisia), and 1,319 men on the island of Aghios Efstratios. FOOD MARKET: There were shortages of basic foodstuffs, particularly fresh fish, in the Athens, Piraeus and suburban food markets this week.
