Devetzi banned from 2012 Games over doping

One of Greece?s most respected athletes, two-time Olympic medallist triple-jumper Piyi Devetzi has been banned from taking part in the London 2012 Games due to a doping offence.

The 35-year-old Devetzi, who won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Games and silver in Athens in 2004, had recently reversed a decision to retire and announced that she planned to return to elite competition.

She had been given a two-year ban for failing to submit a sample to doping controllers from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) on May 23, 2009.

The IAAF said on its website that she had been added to their list of sanctioned athletes and would be banned until December 8, 2012.

“A [federation] commission was to deal with the case, but the IAAF decided to examine it and impose a penalty,» said the president of the Greek track and field federation, Vassilis Sevastis.
