Canoe champion Kiligkaridis clinically dead of leukaemia

Greek canoe champion Andreas Kiligkaridis was pronounced clinically dead on Tuesday due to leukaemia at the age of 37 years.

Earlier the head of the Hellenic Canoe-Kayak Federation Antonis Nikolopoulos had wrongly announced Kilikaridis was already dead.

The Olympian had been in a coma since last Tuesday at a hospital in Poland where he had gone to participate in his sport’s world championship until he collapsed and was found unconscious in his hotel room.

Kiligkaridis, a father of two, had never shown any signs of health problems and a few days before the world championship he had undergone routine medical tests that showed nothing of concern.
