Lucky pick for World Cup qualifiers

The national soccer team secured one more fantastic draw in a major competition, as it has avoided teams such as France, Turkey and Russia to come up against more moderate opponents on its way to reaching the finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Greece will face Slovakia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Lithuania, Latvia and Liechtenstein in its qualifying group, according to the draw conducted late on July 30 in Rio de Janeiro.

Greece was seeded as group leader in one of the qualifying groups as it was among Europe’s top nine teams in the FIFA rankings in July.

The winner of the pool goes straight to the finals, while the runner-up must first negotiate a home-and-away play-off.
