Petsos gets spot in Greece squad

Kaiserslautern defender Thanasis Petsos has earned himself a call-up for Greece’s crucial Euro 2012 qualifiers next month, after a good enough performance in the friendly against Bosnia this month.

Greece manager Fernando Santos has named a 21-man squad for the games away to Israel (on September 2) and Latvia (on September 6).

There is no place for Alexandros Tziolis in the squad, the defensive midfielder who has just been released by Siena.

“We will not change our style of play,» Santos told a press conference on August 26.

“We will go to Israel to win,? he added. ?Israel is an emerging force and has made a good investment in its youth teams. It has players who play in England and Italy. The match will certainly be difficult.»

Below is Greece’s full squad:

Goalkeepers: Michalis Sifakis (Aris), Alexandros Tzorvas (Palermo)

Defenders: Loukas Vyntra, Nikos Spyropoulos (both Panathinakos) Vasilis Torosidis, Avraam Papadopoulos, Yiannis Maniatis (all Olympiakos), Athanasios Petsos (Kaiserslautern), Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Werder Bremen), Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Schalke)

Midfielders: Costas Katsouranis, Sotiris Ninis, Giorgos Karagounis (all Panathinaikos), Pantelis Kafes, Grigoris Makos (both AEK), Yiannis Fetfatzidis (Olympiakos), Giorgos Fotakis (PAOK)

Strikers: Giorgos Samaras (Celtic), Nikos Liberopoulos (AEK), Dimitris Salpigidis, Stefanos Athanasiadis (both PAOK)

Greece currently leads the group with 14 points, one ahead of Croatia and Israel.
