Paralympic medal tally half of that in 2008

Anthi Karayianni and Manolis Stefanoudakis took Greece’s final medal tally to 12 in the London Paralympics that concluded on Sunday with the closing ceremony.

Karayianni finished third in the long jump F13 final measuring 5.16 meters to claim bronze, just like four years ago in Beijing.

Stefanoudakis also grabbed a bronze medal by finishing third in the javelin F54/55/56 final with his best shot at 27.37 meters.

Greece’s medal tally was therefore half of that in Beijing: One gold, three silvers and eight bronzes.

Given the country;s financial problems, though this is no small feat and as swimmer Charalambos Taiganidis told Skai radio on Ssturday the Paralympians cannot ask for too much from the state right now.

“You cannot ask an injured horse to finish first in a race,» said the athlete with 10 medals in the last three Paralympics.
