Second-tier teams show their teeth in Cup
Most Super League teams appeared to take the first leg of the second round of the Greek Cup lightly, as the stiff opposition they faced by second division sides caused quite a few upsets on Wednesday, though not for Olympiakos and Panionios.
Asteras Tripolis failed to beat Hania, a newly-promoted side to the second division, sharing a goalless draw at Tripoli, as did PAS Giannina with Aiginiakos.
Worse, Levadiakos suffered a 2-1 loss at Asteras Magoulas, while Veria went down 3-1 at Iraklis Psahnon. Panthrakikos did not do any better losing 2-1 at Niki Volou.
There were no such problems for Olympiakos, who trounced Fokikos in Piraeus with a 5-1 score, as Serb Marko Scepovic scored twice on his debut. Joel Campbell, Sambou Yatabare and Michael Olaitan were also on the scoresheet for the holder.
In the day’s only game between two Super League teams Panathinaikos beat Ergotelis 2-1 in Athens, as debutant Viktor Klonaridis and Gordon Schildenfeld scored for the Greens, but Dimitris Diamantakos scored an important away goal for the Cretans.
Panionios defeated Apollon Kalamarias 3-1 at home and is the favorite ahead of the return leg next month. Leonidas Kampantais scored twice and Costas Mendrinos added the third goal for the host at Nea Smyrni.
This year the Greek Cup is only contested by first- and second-division clubs. The second legs will be played on October 30 and 31.
