Ewing Jr leads Trikala to upset of PAOK in the A1

The son of New York Knicks legend Pat Ewing, Patrick Ewing Jr scored 22 points to help promoted Trikala defeat high-flying PAOK 87-76 on Saturday in the basketball weekend’s most notable result.

The Thessaloniki side suffered its second league defeat, after that by Olympiakos, to tumble from the top spot of the table, where Panathinaikos sits alone now after defeating the other Thessaloniki team, Aris, 75-59 away on Sunday.

Olympiakos had no problems against visiting Apollon Patras on Monday scoring a 93-71 win in yet another game it played behind closed doors at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, to join PAOK and Panionios at the second spot. Panionios had a hard time beating Ilisiakos at home with a 69-64 score.

Kolossos Rhodes scored a precious win at KAO Dramas (79-76) despite having just a caretaking coach, Michalis Koutalianos, on its bench after the dismissal of Vassilis Frangias a week ago. Dimitris Prifits will be his successor.

Nea Kifissia took a major step in securing its survival in the top flight during its maiden season in the A1 as it defeated fellow struggling Ikaros Halkidas 76-66 at home.

AGO Rethymnou reiterated its claim for a top-four finish staying one point behind Olymiakos, PAOK and Panionios with its 87-72 win at Panelfsiniakos.

There now is a five-way tie at the bottom of the table.
