Olympiakos Volou only tier-two team in last 8 of Cup
Olympiakos Piraeus, PAOK, Panionios and Olympiakos Volou have joined Panathinaikos, Atromitos, Apollon and OFI Crete in the quarterfinals of the Greek Cup after seeing off their round-of-16 opponents in midweek.
Football League leader Olympiakos Volou became the only second-division team to make it into the last eight of the competition beating fellow tier-two team Asteras Magoulas with a 2-1 win away on Thursday for an aggregate triumph of 4-1. The Volos club will face Panathinaikos in the quarterfinals.
Holder Olympiakos Piraeus scored a second win over Asteras Tripolis, this time by just 1-0 at Tripoli, through a Marko Scepovic strike 11 minutes from time, for an aggregate 5-0 victory. In the next round Olympiakos will play Atromitos.
PAOK had beaten Iraklis 1-0 in the first leg and fell behind to its crosstown rival early in the second leg at home. Its response was quite emphatic, though, as it won 5-1 on Wednesday and 6-1 on aggregate to set up a quarterfinal clash with Apollon Smyrnis. Miroslav Stoch scored a brace for PAOK, while new signing Maarten Martens was also on target.
Panionios recovered from the first-leg loss at second-division Aiginiakos with a 1-0 score, to win 3-0 at Nea Smyrni on Thursday and 3-1 on aggregate and start bracing for its clash with OFI.
