AEK Athens returns to top league after financial collapse

Greek club AEK Athens has just returned to the country’s top soccer league, two years after financial collapse sent it to a lower league.

One of the country’s largest clubs, AEK sealed its second consecutive promotion with a 1-0 win over Iraklis on Monday on a 59th-minute goal from Dimitris Anakoglou.

AEK coach Traianos Dellas said he would remain at the club, describing its promotion as a «return to the light» for the fans.

Clubs in Greece’s second division are currently playing promotion playoffs, and AEK has mathematically got promoted with four games remaining.
