Aris beats winless PAOK in Thessaloniki’s basketball derby

PAOK lost to crosstown rival Aris 84-72 on Saturday for its third loss in as many games at the start of the Basket League, which is the worst start in years for the Eurocup challenger.

Aris dominated the Thessaloniki derby at the Nick Galis Hall and fully deserved the victory in a fantastic atmosphere at the stands.

Champion Olympiakos thrashed promoted Arkadikos 89-44 on Monday to recover from two consecutive losses in the league and the Euroleague, while Panathinaikos and AEK have made it three out of three.

Panathinaikos had to come from behind to beat Rethymno 84-60 in Crete on Sunday (with the score at 50-45 in the Cretans' favor 14 minutes from the end), while AEK comfortably defeated visiting Trikala 82-65 on Saturday.

There were also big away wins for Lavrio (its first ever victory in the top flight) over Kifissia with an 82-79 score, for Korivos Amaliadas at Kavala with 89-74, and for Kolossos Rhodes at Apollon Patras (74-58) that led to the departure of Apollon coach Thanassis Papachatzis.

Apollon, PAOK and Arkadikos are the only teams without a win after three rounds of games.
