Euro 2008 bid begins and ends with away dates

Greece will begin and end its Euro 2008 soccer qualifying campaign away, in Moldavia and Hungary respectively, yesterday’s draw determined. The reigning European champion’s campaign begins on September 2 in Moldavia and ends more than a year later in Budapest, on November 21, 2007, when Hungary hosts Greece. In other qualifiers, Greece plays its first home game against Norway on October 7 and travels to Bosnia four days later. Greece then hosts Turkey on March 24 next year and travels to Malta four days later. The national team’s remaining schedule is: Greece-Hungary (2-6-07); Greece-Moldavia (6-6-07); Norway-Greece (12-9-07); Greece-Bosnia (13-10-07); Turkey-Greece (17-10-07); and Greece-Malta (17-11-07). Greece coach Otto Rehhagel has called for the domestic league to resume – following the summer break – no later than August 20. Turkey was recently ordered to play its next six official games behind closed doors at a neutral venue due to violence in a recent World Cup qualifier against Switzerland.
