Baghdatis has solid start in Melbourne

Cypriot tennis star Marcos Baghdatis, last year’s runner-up at the Australian Open, began this year’s campaign in Melbourne with a 3-1 win yesterday over 31-year-old German opponent Rainer Schuettler in the Grand Slam tournament’s opening round of play. Baghdatis served powerfully to overcome his opponent 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. The 22-year-old Cypriot, ranked 11th in the world, rose to worldwide fame with his run to last year’s final in Melbourne, and followed up the triumph by reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon several months later.
