Greece makes a splash dunk

Greece’s water polo players had an easier start than they had anticipated in the men’s European Championship in Malaga yesterday morning with a comfortable 12-3 win over Slovakia. The players of Italian coach Sandro Campagna went ahead from the outset, leading 2-1 after the first period and with the halftime score at 5-2 the Greek team even saved some of its energy for the next matches in the six-team group. The second half’s 7-1 score meanwhile served to illustrate the strength of the Greek team’s bench, since a number of substitutes were introduced in the latter stages of the game. Today, at 8.30 p.m., Greece plays Montenegro in one of the most crucial group games. Apart from Slovenia and Montenegro, Greece will face Hungary tomorrow, Spain on Monday and Croatia on Tuesday. The top three of each group advance to the next round. Today the women’s team also begins the tournament, playing France at 5.30 p.m. Tomorrow the women face Italy and on Monday they clash with Hungary.
