Weightlifting Improving on last year’s seven-medal performance at the Junior Weightlifting World Championships in Thessaloniki, Greece picked up 10 medals at this year’s event in the Czech Republic. Among the top performers, Vassiliki Kasapi, 19, who competed in the 75-kilogram category, picked up three medals, a silver and two bronzes, and broke national records in the snatch and overall. World Cup Greek soccer referee Kyros Vassaras, the country’s first to take part in the World Cup finals, proved unpopular with Costa Rica in his debut game on Tuesday, despite its 2-0 win over China in their opening Group C match. Coach Alexandre Guimares said the Greek referee, who handed out four yellow cards to his players, was too tough. During the game, Guimares told team member Ronald Gomez, who plays in Greece with Cretan club OFI, to soften up the referee with some Greek. Olympics Olympic organizers issued a commemorative pin yesterday to mark 800 days until the 2004 Games. The pin, which features the number 800 and the olive wreath 2004 logo, is part of a limited edition series released every 100 days until the Games. Organizers also announced that Athens 2004 product sales exceeded expectations for the first two months of this year.
