Prosecutor recommends ex-Thessaloniki mayor be found guilty of embezzlement
A public prosecutor recommended to criminal appeals court in Thessaloniki on Tuesday that the city’s former mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos and the ex-municipal general secretary Michalis Lemousias be found guilty of embezzling more than 50 million euros from the authority’s coffers.
Prosecutor Vassilis Haldoupis argued that the two men are the moral instigators of the theft and that Lemousias should also be convicted of forging official documents.
The prosecutor also recommended that former municipal treasurer Panayiotis Saxonis be found guilty of being involved in the embezzlement.
Haldoupis is due to issue recommendations to the court for another 15 suspects.
