Inspections continue for horse meat in Greece

As state veterinary inspectors continued with checks on food manufacturers and retailers in the wake of a horse meat scandal, Deputy Agricultural Development Minister Maximos Harakopoulos insisted on Tuesday that “there is no public health risk.”

The results of tests on goods stored at warehouses, retail outlets and catering services are expected later this week.

Athens public prosecutor Panagiota Fakou has joined the investigation and is in contact with the General Chemical State Laboratory and the financial police, who are inspecting firms that import food.

Meanwhile Swedish furniture retailer Ikea has withdrawn meatballs from outlets in Greece after traces of horse meat were found in the same product in the Czech Republic.
