Three Golden Dawn MPs taken to prison after facing magistrates

The three Golden Dawn MPs remanded in custody over the weekend on charges of being part of a criminal organization were taken to prison on Monday morning.

Panagiotis Iliopoulos and Giorgos Germenis were transferred to Korydallos Prison, while Stathis Boukouras was taken to a jail in Nafplio.

All three lawmakers denied the charges against them when they faced magistrates Ioanna Klapa and Maria Dimitropoulou but Boukouras’s deposition in particular caught the attention. He denied being a member of the Neo-Nazi party and said that he had never taken part in or encouraged attacks on immigrants.

Boukouras also insisted that during his involvement with the party, he had never witnessed any references to Nazi ideology, or discussion of ways to bring down democracy.

The arrest of the three MPs means that six of the party’s 18 parliamentarians are now in custody, while charges have been issued against another three.
