Trial of policemen over bodily harm charges postponed

The trial of 18 policemen accused of putting citizens’ safety at risk during anti-austerity protests in Athens on June 29, 2011 was postponed on Monday until August 16.

The police officers, members of the MAT anti-riot and motorcycle-riding DIAS squads, face charges of causing grievous bodily harm and exposing citizens to danger.

The case file notes the types of injuries, particularly those to the head, suffered by protesters and also contains evidence that the police failed to help the injured.

It also contains evidence that suggests police officers threw rocks and made use of tear gas inside the metro station at Syntagma Square.
