Probe into prison may lead to charges for prosecutors
Two prosecutors could face charges of being negligent for their role in convicted November 17 member Christodoulos Xeros being granted prison furloughs.
Xeros disappeared while on a nine-day leave earlier this month and has since vowed to return to terrorism.
An investigation into how a terrorist serving six life sentences was allowed out of Korydallos Prison by the Piraeus appeals prosecutor’s office has collected evidence that could be damning for the two prosecutors, one of whom was the first to grant Xeros a furlough in 2011.
The other prosecutor awarded the former instrument maker his seventh, and most recent, pass.
The results of the probe have been passed to the Supreme Court and are due to be examined on Monday.
Meanwhile, Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias refused to be drawn into a war of words with Justice Minister Charalambos Athanasiou over who was responsible for Xeros’s disappearance.
“We all known what happened but now we’re looking to tomorrow,” said Dendias after Athanasiou suggested that the public order minister carried the bulk of the responsibility for Xeros going missing.
