Samaras visits quake-stricken island

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras arrived on the Ionian island of Cephalonia late Tuesday, on his way back from a trip to Brussels where he addressed a Business Europe conference and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The premier’s visit to the island, which was struck by a 5.9 Richter earthquake on Sunday, had not been scheduled.

“I wanted to see for myself the results of the earthquake,” said Samaras upon his arrival on the island late Tuesday.

Following a late night meeting on Tuesday the prime minister was expected to tour the island’s worst-hit areas on Wednesday.
