Finance minister to meet with Central Macedonia MPs to discuss farmers' demands

Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras is due to meet with parliamentary deputies representing the region on Central Macedonia, one of Greece's biggest agricultural areas, in a bid to end a deadlock with farmers who continue to protest new tax regulations for their sector.

Unionists representing farmers in the northern Greece region said they will be limiting their protests to actions of a symbolic nature while talks are ongoing, but did not rule out increasing pressure on the government if Tuesday's meeting does not end in concessions.

Farmers from around the country, meanwhile, are expected to converge in Athens on Wednesday for a protest rally in front on Parliament.

Speaking to the state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency on Tuesday, a unionist said that MPs representing Central Macedonia had expressed their support for the farmers' claims, but added that they could only exercise a limited amount of pressure on the fragile coalition government to make significant concessions.
