Eurobank’s big slide drags most local stocks lower

Eurobank dominated the action during Tuesday’s bourse session. The bank stock’s major decline combined with its 53.5 percent share of all trading on the day sent indices lower as the turnover climbed.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,215.08 points, shedding 1.42 percent from Monday’s 1,232.52 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 contracted 1.36 percent to 391.26 points, while mid-caps slumped 3.97 percent.

Eurobank plummeted 19.10 percent, dragging other banks down as National fell 1.75 percent and Alpha gave up 2.13 percent.

Marfin Investment Group posted the highest losses among blue chips, giving up 6.32 percent, while EYDAP bucked the trend, adding 1.87 percent after Monday’s 8.64 percent decline.

In total, 36 stocks registered gains, 77 ended lower and 24 remained unchanged.

Turnover was 131.6 million euros, nearly double Monday’s 68.1 million.
