Wait is still on for many taxpayers
Some 200,000 taxpayers are still waiting for their income tax declarations, which were submitted in time, to be processed, while a number of other problems are putting the payment of the first tranche, by July 31, in jeopardy for many.
The Finance Ministry has not yet processed the statements submitted by tens of thousands of taxpayers before midnight on July 14 because they were asked to submit documents regarding their salaries along with retail receipts to the tax offices, while others have submitted statements in which they challenge their tax obligations. Ministry officials say that the staff are busy trying to ensure that all problems are resolved whether they stem from the online Taxisnet system or legislation.
The question is, if those statements are not processed in time for the first deadline of July 31, will the payment be considered overdue? The law dictates that the three income tax installments should be paid by the end of July, the end of September and the end of November.
There are numerous cases of taxpayers who submitted statements in which they challenge their tax obligations, as the online system included details regarding their properties (real estate or vehicles) that could not be altered, even though they are inaccurate.
A Kathimerini reader complained that in the last few years he had always erased from his online statement the details of a car stolen 15 years ago which he had previously submitted to the tax authorities, but to this day the tax authorities continue to list his car among his assets in his statement. The difference is that as of this year he is not able to erase it, so he was forced to submit a statement in which he challenged his tax obligations.
