Property tax notices due in September
The Finance Ministry will send out new notifications regarding the single property ownership tax (ENFIA) by mid-September, following the uproar over the many errors contained in the original notices two weeks ago.
Officials said Monday that taxpayers will be given more time, in the form of installments, to pay the tax, starting from the end of September. According to Eurostat, to whom the government turned for advice, the tax may be paid off until March 2015, which provides for seven monthly installments instead of the original five.
But the officials discounted the possibility that the burden of the tax, totaling 2.65 billion euros, may be lightened in the short term, although the government intends to do so in coming years.
The ENFIA issue is expected to be included in the agenda of meetings with the troika which are scheduled to take place in Paris between September 3 and 5.
Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis has said the corrections that will be made to the original ENFIA calculations will concern properties in some 4,000 rural districts that are outside the system of administrative values designated for tax purposes.
