Greek judges reject Cyprus request to extradite Bobolas

A council of appeals court judges decided on Wednesday to turn down a request from Cyprus for businessman Leonidas Bobolas to be extradited in connection with a corruption case.

Cypriot authorities want to question Bobolas in respect to an investigation into waste management contracts.

The Cypriot investigation concerns Helector, a subsidiary of Ellaktor, where Bobolas is the CEO, and how it gained contracts to run the Marathounda and Koshi landfills on Cyprus. Bobolas, though, wants to be tried in Greece.

His lawyers have argued that all the offenses their client is accused of, bar one, are alleged to have taken place in Greece.

The judges did not publish their reasoning straight away but it is thought that they accepted this as a valid argument.

The case file will now be passed to the First Instance Prosecutor’s Office so an investigation can be carried out into the allegations made against Bobolas.
